Tips for Your First Valentine’s Day After Divorce

Tips for Your First Valentine’s Day After Divorce

For thousands of Americans, Valentine’s Day is a lovey dovey day full of sweets and grand gestures. When you are newly divorced, this day can be a reminder of your previous relationship and bring up sad feelings.

While it is just one day out of the year, it can have a big effect on one’s mood! But lucky or you, we’ve come up with our best tips for you to make the best out of this romantic holiday.

Make sure to treat yourself!
This year, make a conscious decision to do something for YOU. Treat yourself to what you truly love. Whether it’s going to a fitness class, ordering your favorite latte, or treating yourself to a gift that you have wanted for a while, do at least one thing this Valentine’s Day that’s solely for you, and you only!

Fill your day with people that you love!
You may no longer be in a committed relationship but that doesn’t mean you can’t spend the day with your other loved ones. This is a day to appreciate love and affection, which isn’t always romantic! Whether it’s your kids, close friends, family, whoever it may be, remember that Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love so spend it with the people in your life that make you happy. Use your support system and spend time with them on Valentine’s Day.

Look forward to your future
Valentine’s Day is a holiday that’s rooted in love and if you’re newly divorced, it can be a painful reminder of your past relationship. While some people will encourage you to occupy your mind with activities and other things, it can be healthy to take some time and acknowledge your feelings. Maybe you’re experiencing anger or sadness, whatever emotions you are feeling today, you owe it to yourself to process these feelings and then leave them in the past and move on.

Try to challenge yourself to look at Valentine’s Day in a new light this year. Instead of thinking of love lost, use it as a starting off point to find love again! Whether it’s in focusing on yourself or putting yourself out there to meet someone, focus on the future and keep the past behind you.

Come up with new ideas for this holiday!
Just because you’re not currently in a relationship doesn’t mean that you can’t take advantage of the Valentine’s Day specials in your city. Plenty of businesses offer special discounts on art classes that you can enjoy with a close group of friends or even your kids. Or, if you’d rather host a get together, head over to Pinterest and find a fun DIY craft that you can do in the comfort of your home with the ones you love. Might as well take advantage of holiday deals!

Or, treat it like just another day
There is no pressure for you to even celebrate Valentine’s Day. You can just treat it like any other Monday! Valentine’s Day is all in what you make of it and if you want to celebrate it go ahead and do what makes you happy. But, if you want to treat it like a normal day, that’s fine too! You’re in control of the day and how you spend it so make sure you’re doing something that’s good for you and your wellbeing. If you aren’t ready to approach love again, there is no pressure and you should focus on your healing.
