Spouses of Non-US Citizens and Stimulus Checks

Many people are checking their bank accounts and their mailboxes for a stimulus check promised by the U.S. Government, as part of the C.A.R.E. Act. However, there are a number of people who will not find a check waiting for them.  The government is not issuing stimulus checks to people who have spouses that are not U.S. Citizens.

If you file your taxes jointly with your spouse, and your spouse is not a U.S. Citizen, or doesn’t have a Social Security number, chances are you will not be receiving a stimulus check. This includes funds that would be received for the children in the marriage.

However, the government did create one carve-out or exception for this.  Although any family that files taxes with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (which the Internal Revenue Service issues to workers who lack Social Security numbers)  cannot receive an Economic Impact Payment, this requirement will not apply if one of the spouses is a member of the U.S. Armed Forces.
