How to Spend your First Valentine’s Day After Your Divorce

When you’re in a relationship, Valentine’s Day is a celebration of your love and commitment.

When you’re newly divorced, Valentine’s Day might serve as a reminder of the relationship that once was.

Depending on the circumstances, the first Valentine’s Day after a divorce can be a liberating experience or it can be a day that’s difficult to deal with.

If you’re feeling emotions that align with the latter, in this blog post, we’re sharing five ideas to keep your mind right and focused on the future this Valentine’s Day!

Treat Yourself!

This year, make a conscious decision to do something for YOU. Treat yourself to what you truly love. Whether it’s going to a fitness class, ordering your favorite latte, or treating yourself to some new clothes or a high-tech gadget, do at least one thing this Valentine’s Day that’s solely for you, and you only!

Spend the day with the people you love

You may no longer be in a committed relationship but that doesn’t mean you can’t spend the day with your other loved ones. Whether it’s your kids, close friends, family, whoever it may be, remember that Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love so spend it with the people in your life that make you happy.

Acknowledge the past but look to the future

Valentine’s Day is a holiday that’s rooted in love and if you’re newly divorced, it can be a painful reminder of your past relationship. While some people will encourage you to occupy your mind with activities and other things, it can be healthy to take some time and acknowledge your feelings. Maybe you’re experiencing anger or sadness, whatever emotions you are feeling today, you owe it to yourself to acknowledge, process, and then leave them in the past and move on. Challenge yourself to look at Valentine’s Day in a new light this year. Instead of thinking of love lost, use it as a starting off point to find love again, whether it’s in focusing on yourself, getting back to the activities you once enjoyed, or putting yourself out there to meet someone, focus on the future and keep the past behind you.

Get creative

Just because you’re not currently in a relationship doesn’t mean that you can’t take advantage of the Valentine’s Day specials in your city. Plenty of businesses offer special discounts on art classes that you can enjoy with a close group of friends or even your kids. Or, if you’d rather host a get together, head over to Pinterest and find a fun DIY craft that you can do in the comfort of your home with the ones you love.

Treat it like any other day

It’s your prerogative if you want to celebrate or treat February 14 as just another day on the calendar. Valentine’s Day is all in what you make of it and if you want to celebrate it go ahead and do what makes you happy. But, if you want to treat it like a normal day, that’s fine too! You’re in control of the day and how you spend it so make sure you’re doing something that’s good for you and your wellbeing.
