Will Obamacare Lead to an Increase In Divorce?

Will the Affordable Care Act cause more people to finalize their divorce? Many people put off finalizing their divorce because they need to stay on their spouse’s insurance. They will hold off on finalizing paper work until the dependent party is able to qualify for Medicare. A study released last year by the University of Michigan estimated that 115,000 women lose their private health insurance as a result of divorce. Financial hardship is at a high for divorced women, and many do not qualify for public insurance or Medicare.

The Affordable Care Act will allow for people to purchase healthcare insurance through government-subsidized health insurance exchanges that will not penalize people for pre-existing conditions. Only time will tell how large of an impact the Affordable Care Act will have on divorce rates.
