How to Co-Parent During COVID-19

How to Co-Parent During COVID-19

COVID-19 has presented new challenges for parents trying to navigate co-parenting and a blended family. Here are four tips for surviving this new normal:

Communicate Often

Whether it’s during a pandemic or not, making sure that everyone is on the same page is crucial. Throughout this time, especially, it’s important to over-communicate with your ex-spouse when it comes to your children. Instead of texting and emailing, pick up the phone and call your co-parent to discuss upcoming schedules, schooling, visits, etc.

Stay Up-To-Date About The Coronavirus

In order to effectively plan visits with your children, stay informed about COVID-19 regulations and shut-downs. You can do this by visiting your local news websites. Take time to discuss with your co-parents health and safety recommendations offered by medical professionals and the CDC. Your goal as a parent is for you and your children to stay healthy and COVID-19 free.

Prepare Financially

During this time, job loss is inevitable. If you’re suffering financially due to the pandemic, have a conversation with your co-parent about potential adjustments that need to be made to commitments you made in the past. It’s important to be flexible and open to changes that might need to be made.

Utilize Technology

COVID-19 may present challenges that hinder parents and children from meeting up. In that case, it’s beneficial to leverage technological tools such as Zoom, Google Hangouts and Facetime that allow you to virtually chat with loved ones. Additionally, work with your co-parent to set up regular calls with your children.
